J.P. Bumgardner's Buck

J.P. Bumgardner killed this 9 pt. on Dec. 28, 2001 with a 30-06. He weighed 195# and though only had a 13" spread, had 5 3/4 inch bases. Here is his story in his own words...

My father, a friend and I had hunted this area the evening before, and my friend saw a 20" deer with 8 does but could not get a shot off because the big buck was continuously running off smaller bucks. We decided to go in 45 min. before daylight and stay all day. We bought bologna and Snickers bars at Piggly Wiggly to get us through the day. I started seeing deer at 3:00pm and had to shoot a doe before event thinking about shooting a buck (club rules). I killed a 135# doe at 4:15pm. The river was up at this time and everything was flooded. We had to use a john boat to navigate the 4 wheeler trails. I knew I had about a 1/4 mile drag to the boat so decided to climb down about 4:50. While turning around in my stand I could hear something walking in deep water. Off about 125 yds, I could see tall, white horns. This buck was wading a slew in chest deep water. I shot him at 100 yds in the water but nothing happened. I couldn't hear or see him. I climbed down and walked over to where I had shot and heard something to my right. I saw him about 150 yds off and when I looked through my scope, his back was hunched up like he had been gut shot. I shot him again and he dropped. Upon walking up to him and kicking his rump, he started flailing his head and rack around. I shot him point blank in the neck to finish him. The river had dropped out during the day and there were now high spots in the 4wheeler trail. With the two deer, two stands, guns, gear, etc, the boat was so heavy. We had to drag the boat over alot of the trail. Got back to camp 1:30am. 22 1/2 hours after the day started. What a great hunt!!
